FOCS' 96 General Information


Location:

All conference events (except the banquet) will take place at the Radisson Hotel in Burlington, Vermont. Burlington is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, just south of the border with Canada.


Registration:

The registration desk will be open at Sunday, October 13 at 6 pm and will remain open throughout the conference.


Accommodations:

The Radisson Hotel is located at 60 Battery Street, across the street from Lake Champlain. Battery Park, with its cannons still waiting for battle and vistas of Lake Champlain and the Adirondak Mountains, is a very short walk from the hotel. The Hotel has no-smoking floors, universally accessible (barrier free) rooms, a heated indoor pool, a whirlpool and exercise room. The traffic-free downtown area of Burlington, with shops, restaurants and brew pub is five minutes by foot from the Hotel. The Hotel has the requisite room services and in-house restaurants.


Transportation:

The Burlington International Airport is located 6 kilometers from the Radisson Hotel. The Hotel provides complimentary shuttle service from and to the airport. A courtesy phone is in the arrival area of the airport. The nearest train station is in Essex Junction, Vermont, about 15 kilometers east of Burlington. There is a small boat dock about 200 meters from the Hotel. It is also possible to drive to the Hotel.

Driving Instructions:

From the North, take Interstate 89 south to exit 14W onto US Route 2. Route 2 becomes Main St. After a few kilometers, you will be heading down-hill towards the lake. Continue to Battery St., at the bottom of the hill. Take a right, and the Hotel is on your right. Parking is free of charge for Hotel guests.

From the New York City area, take Interstate 87 North, to US Route 4. Take US Route 4 north to US Route 7 north. US Route 7 intersects with US Route 2 in Burlington. Head west (left) and follow the instructions above.

From the Hartford, CT area, take Interstate 91 north to Interstate 89 north. Take exit 14W from Interstate 89 and follow the instructions above.

From the Boston, MA area, take Interstate 93 north to Interstate 89 north. Take exit 14W from Interstate 89 and follow the instructions above.

For a more interesting route, you can take a ferry. Ferries to Vermont depart from Plattsburgh, Port Kent and Essex. For questions about the ferry crossings not given below, contact the Lake Champlain Transportation Company, (802) 864-9804.

The Plattsburgh ferry is 8 kilometers from exit 39 off Interstate 87, takes 12 minutes to cross and leaves you in Grand Isle, 19 kilometers from Interstate 89. Take Route 314 from Interstate 87 to the ferry. From the ferry continue on Route 314 to Route 2 to Interstate 89 south. Take Interstate 89 to exit 14W and follow the instructions above. Service runs from 5:00am through 1:00am with crossings every 20 minutes between 9:00am and 9:00pm. The cost is $6.75 for car and driver, $2.00 per extra passenger. Discounts for a round trip are available.

The Port Kent ferry is 9 kilometers from either exit 34 or 35 of Interstate 87 (head east, toward the lake), takes 60 minutes to cross and leaves you in Burlington, 200 meters from the hotel. Service runs from 8:00am to 5:30pm with crossings every 80 minutes. The cost is $12.00 for car and driver, $3.00 per extra passenger. This ferry will not run after October 13.

The Essex ferry is 18 kilometers from either exit 31 (take Route 9N to Route 22) or exit 33 (take Route 22) off Interstate 87. This ferry has a crossing time of 20 minutes and leaves you in Charlotte. Take Route F5 to Route 7. Head north to Burlington and follow the directions above. Service is every half hour from 9:00am through 5:30pm. There is less frequent service starting at 7:00am and ending at at 7:30pm. The cost is $6.75 for car and driver, $2.00 per extra passenger. Discounts for a round trip are available.


Climate:

Prepare for cool days and cold nights. The combination of relatively warm days and crisp nights is what produces the marvelous foliage. Frost is almost a certainty.
